Message from the Associate Dean. Welcome to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at Piscataway, which is based in Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
While May was a pleasant month, with just slightly cooler than normal weather, the feel of the approaching summer was really not there, with the exception of Memorial Day weekend, when the thermometer finally climbed to 80 degrees for the first time since April 23.

Sunshine was near normal during May, and we did not experience any of the often-occurring persistence of overcast, cool and damp weather this past May. On June 3, our high in the mid-80s brought the warmth of summer but without the humidity.

May’s rainfall of just over two inches was more than an inch-and-a-half below normal but the year‘s rainfall remained very close to normal and was just over 20 inches. However, as the warmer weather arrives in June, we must get more general and heavier rainfall to keep our lawns nice and green and keep the gardens watered. Last summer’s drought started after the 20th of May, and so far we’ve not seen much difference in the two seasons. However, it’s so early we cannot predict whether or not this year will have a dry summer once again. Early season 90-degree weather may arrive at the start of the second week of this month, but for a while coastal areas may be saved from a scorching by cool sea breezes.

The 2008 hurricane officially got underway on June 1. The first named storms formed, including Alma in the eastern Pacific and Arthur in the Atlantic right near the coast of Central America. The first tropical storm in the eastern Pacific season was named Alma on May 29 and highest winds reached a sustained 65 mph as it entered the Pacific coast of northern Nicaragua before weakening over the mountains of Honduras. Alma dissipated to a tropical depression on May 30 while causing 10 to 15 inches of rainfall and flooding.
The next day, Arthur, the first Atlantic named storm, formed near the coast of Belize, likely spawned out of the remnants of Alma. The weak storm had sustained winds of 40 mph as it moved across the southern Yucatan Peninsula before dissipating over land in Guatemala June 1.
